Straight talk

Repair or replace?

Age of the system, then the cost of the repair against a new one. We’ll tell you if a repair isn’t worth it.

Start with the age

  • Under 8 years

Repair usually makes sense. A capacitor, a contactor, a fan motor, or a defrost board is cheaper than a new system. We fix it and leave.

  • 8 to 15 years

It depends. We price the repair against what’s left in the machine. A refrigerant leak on a 12-year-old heat pump is a conversation, not a pitch.

  • Over 15 years

Look hard at replacement, especially if the compressor is failing. A patched-up system this age often dies again next winter.

Repair cost versus the system

If the repair is more than about half the price of a new system of the same size, we say so. A $3,800 compressor on a 16-year-old heat pump is not a favor. A $240 capacitor on a 6-year-old system is.

Demo prices, not a bid on your house.

We’ll say it out loud

We would rather lose the replacement than sell you a system you don’t need. If a repair will get you through the season, we say that too. If it won’t, we won’t dress it up.
